What NoteKiln stores on our servers
NoteKiln accounts exist solely for billing and (future) sync. We store the minimum required: your email address, a hashed password or OAuth identifier, and subscription status.
We never store your notes, lectures, study materials, or any content you create inside the NoteKiln app. All of that lives in a local SQLite database on your machine.
Local data
Everything you create in NoteKiln (classes, lectures, notes, uploaded documents, and your local search index) is stored locally on your device. NoteKiln does not upload, sync, or transmit this content to any server (including ours) except as described in the AI section below.
AI queries
When you use AI features, NoteKiln sends your question and relevant excerpts from your local documents to an AI model for processing.
- BYOK mode: Queries go directly from your machine to Anthropic's API. They do not pass through NoteKiln servers. Anthropic's privacy policy governs this data.
- Subscription mode: Queries are relayed through a NoteKiln proxy, which enforces your monthly usage cap and forwards the request to Anthropic. We do not log or store query content beyond what is necessary for billing.
Embeddings
Vector embeddings for semantic search are computed entirely on your device using local ONNX models. No embedding data is sent to any external service.
Analytics and tracking
This website uses minimal analytics to understand how people discover NoteKiln. No tracking scripts are loaded inside the desktop app. We do not sell data to third parties.
